The Canon stand was constantly thriving with activity throughout Visual Impact Melbourne 2015. Continuing with its popular fictitious client theme created for PrintEx15 – the Coffeco Coffee Company, Canon took delegates through a variety of creative and innovative responses to the diverse print requirements of a typical business, demonstrating just how the right ideas and strategies, supported by innovative technologies, can add value and maximise margins.

Encompassing everything from printed menus, place mats and drink coasters, to signage and POS, printed interior finishes, print in manufacturing on iPhone covers, and more conventional printed products like business cards and letterheads, the Coffeco products were as popular as ever, at the show last week.
Canon stand at VI Melbourne 2015Alexandra Grant, Program Manager, Canon Professional Print, chatted to us briefly on the Canon stand, confirming the impending launch of ONYX 12 software, which was released just after the show.
Aimed to benefit sign and graphic businesses in Australia who invest in their range of Wide Format print technology, the newly-launched, next-generation ONYX 12 software is built on the proven performance of ONYX 11.
Allowing operators to ‘do more in less time’, the new enhanced performance software makes printing more predictable and offers faster RIP performance (thanks to updated RIP engines), a simplified user interface and advanced finishing tools for easier and faster production.
According to Thomas Mckerrow, Product Manager for Canon Professional Print, the new ONYX 12 software can lift productivity significantly - files can now be processed to rip in approximately 15 seconds, which in previous versions took a full  30 seconds.
The new version also features a more intuitive graphical interface, customisable to suit the needs of individual operations for simpler, and more responsive operation. Jobs are easy to find, manage and edit, while live previews improve print predictability by allowing users to see exactly what is happening on each job in real time, eliminating guesswork and reducing the opportunity for error.
In addition, Quick Set production templates are fast and easy to create, save and share on the new system while new page and offset controls allow for easy image placement for roll-to-roll or flatbed applications.
To increase flexibility and eliminate time consuming tasks, there are new features such as (1) a new bleed function for adding borders to wrapped canvas prints, pole pocket trips for banners, or top or bottom extensions for pop-up stands; (2) Automatic Cut Path Generation eliminates white space in print-and-cut jobs and (3) new finishing tools which enable automatic grommet and mark placements for finishing – all without the need to change original artwork.
Available across the entire ONYX product line from Thrive workflow, ProductionHouse and PosterShop to RIPCenter RIP software, ONYX 12 will be standard on all Wide Format printers ordered from Canon from September 2015.
