Whilst the trade press overseas have been humming with the news that HP have declared themselves the first to use recycled plastics in the manufacture of ink cartridges, here at home HP today announced its first recycling program for HP Indigo ink canisters.

Piloted in three Australian cities - Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne – the HP Indigo Recycling Program, in partnership with reseller Currie Group, is expected to collect and recycle around 60,000 HP Indigo ink canisters every year.

In line with its commitment to environmental sustainability, HP has added this new recycling initiative to achieve its aim of converting a total estimated 6.2 million tons of waste per year into recyclable material within Australia. Following the success of the pilot program, HP will look to implement this environmentally responsible initiative globally over the next year.

“Prior to the HP Indigo Recycling Program, print service providers who use HP Indigo ink canisters had no access to environmentally responsible disposal avenues,” said VS Hariharan, Vice President of Graphic Arts Business, HP Imaging and Printing Group, Asia Pacific & Japan. “HP has taken the initiative to bridge this gap by enabling ink canister recycling and is looking forward to introducing this initiative worldwide.. Such recycling programs will continue to give our customers choice, convenience and control in how to dispose of products responsibly.”

This recycling program is available to HP’s Indigo commercial and industrial print service providers in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Used ink canisters are collected by Currie Group and transported directly to a recycling facility certified under ISO 14001 standard at zero cost and maximum convenience for HP’s customers.

“Currie Group is proud to actively contribute to environmental conservation efforts through this collaboration with HP. Our customers continue to receive on-time delivery of ink canisters, and at the same time, be able to conveniently return used canisters for recycling.” said Phillip Rennell, Currie Group’s HP Indigo business manager.

The HP Indigo Recycling Program in Australia builds on the momentum of the HP ink and toner recycling program, Cartridges 4 PlanetArk.  This offers the collection of cartridges from offices and drop off boxes in selected retail stores.  To date, this program has succeeded in diverting millions of printer cartridges from Australia’s landfills.

In addition to recycling, HP offers a variety of other product end-of-life management services including donations, trade-ins, asset recovery and leasing. More information about HP’s environmental initiatives is available at www.hp.com/go/environment.
