A brief overview of some of the highlights at the Printex/VIIE show. Our apologies to those exhibitors who we were not able to speak to and include here.

Agfa Graphics
On show were and the Anapurna M1600 and the Jeti 3020 Titan. Readers will know that Agfa Graphics have been extremely successful with the Anapurna range both here and worldwide and according to Steve Taylor, Oceania business manager for inkjet, more installations are expected resulting from the show.
Anitech:
Seiko
Anitech were proud to be the first company in the world to show off the new entry level ColorPainter W-64S at the VIIE last week.

The printer can truly be called unique in several respects. Firstly it can switch between two types of ink, regular low solvent GX ink or the new HAPs (hazardous air pollutants) ink, called LX.

Anitech_animationBarry Grant, GM of Anitech together with Tommy Mita (Seiko’s International Sales & Marketing Manager) told us how Seiko moved into printer manufacturing: Tommy explained that it came about when the company could not find a printer capable of what was required of it in the manufacture of their watches, so they built their own printer. The rest is history.

Both gentlemen were keen to point out that Seiko’s new HAPs inks almost eliminate the odour as well as the dangers of solvent and eco solvents inks, yet perform equally well as normal solvent inks.

Bordeaux Digital Printink
Assaf Doukhan, sales account manager for Bordeaux in Israel was invited to the show by Anitech. Assaf  together with Yoong Lee, National BDM for Anitech, explained that whilst they didn’t have any new products at the show, they will be launching new products at FESPA. The new products include a new UV ink for Mimaki as well as a new bulk ink system for Mimaki printers. Prototype LED inks were also mentioned as being available shortly.

Presently, Bordeaux ink cartridges can be used on all the major printing machines without any interruption to printing. Just remove the OEM cartridge and replace with the Bordeaux cartridge without any cleaning or profiling required. It was claimed the Bordeaux inks will offer a better colour gamut and better adhesion and scratch resistance and of course a better price.

No white ink or metallic are available at present but orange and green should be available shortly in the solvent range. White ink is available in the UV range.

Trimalco
A new UK company that had its first appearance at FESPA 2010. Alex McLean, a man with a long history in cutters and trimmers, as well as the owner and founder of the Trimalco range attended the show to promote the range for the first time in Australia. Neil Gomez, Anitech’s BDM said that the range of trimmers are exclusively designed for the wide format sign and graphics industry.

Alex said the range included trimmers ranging from 60cm up to 500cm, all designed to cut most of the media used in the industry. “Coming from the UK manufacturing plant, we can offer UK quality engineering and safety at Chinese pricing”, he said.
Neil Gomez added that their first consignment of cutters in February was rapidly sold out and their second consignment which hasn’t arrived yet, is about fifty per cent sold out already.
Bannershop
Rose Berthon, Bannershop’s Marketing Assistant explained the purpose of their presence at the show which was to promote the opportunities that this international operator can offer our industry with fast turn around of prints delivered to anywhere in the world at competitive pricing. Specific products including the Super Smooth Block Out double sided poster material, a block out which completely obscures the reverse image when viewed in all light condtions.
Chief Media
Brightview – Two way vision film
Holger Harms from Intercoat in Germany introduced a Multitac removable vinyl film that has adhering properties similar to the famous 3M sticky notes. It can be lifted and replaced numerous times without damaging the adhering properties.
We were also introduced to Brightview, a new range of Two Way and One Way Vision films manufactured by JC Flex. The two way film is a patented product. Instead of being perforated, it is printed with white dots which effectively replace the holes in traditional two way vision films.
Canon
Troy Neighbour, Product Manager for the large format printers took us through the paces of the new 44 inch imagePROGRAF iPF8300S. For a full review of the product see our earlier news piece

Durst
Star of the show from a wide format printing productivity point of view was the Rho 800 Presto HS (high speed), a monster that is designed to print 24/7 whilst printing at 600 dpi and at a production speed up to 216 square metres per hour. Maximum width is 2.5 metres.
Greg Fereday of local agents Photo Electronic Systems said that much interest had been shown in this machine at the show. The company has an impressive local installed base of this model together with all the other Rho models.
The latest model, the entry level Omega 1 was not on show but again much interest was being expressed by people who knew of the company’s pedigree in production speeds, image quality and reliability.
EFI VUTEk and Rastek
VUTEk had machines on both the DES stand and the iMedia stand. DES’s stand included the impressive VUTEk GS3200 which towards the end of the show was bragging a ‘sold’ sign.

The iMedia stand also included a VUTEk QS3220.

Both company’s had a Rastek H652 on display, an entry level machine that delivers photographic image quality, including white ink at a very affordable price.

Epson
Craig Heckenberg showed off the industry’s first water based white ink proofing system, the Stylus Pro WT7900. Coming from the industry leader in inkjet proofing devices and photo printers, it was little wonder that Epson would be a first in this field.
Also on show as the ubiquitous GS6000, a firm favourite with wide format printers both here and across the globe and of course Epson’s wide range of other printers.
Another relatively new addition to the Epson product range was the SurePress L-4033A, a high speed digital label printer.
 Fuji Xerox
The company had recently made a decision to go into wide format printing and is now a distributor of Mutoh and Epson machines. On display at Printex was a Mutoh ValueJet 1304 printer.
Fujifilm
Sister company, Fujifilm had one of the show’s big stories by announcing the sale of flagship printer, the Inca Onset S20. Applications specialists, Matthew Philp told us that the machine was simply too big for their stand at the show, however the sale went to Retail Communications.

Also on show was the Acuity HD2565, the latest model in the popular Acuity range. The Euromedia range was also on display.
Roland DG
The star of the Roland DG stand was without doubt the first viewing of the VersaUV LEJ-640 hybrid. This is Roland’s first offering in the flatbed printer market and looks set to be a winner.
Anthony McCausland, Roland DGs marketing manager told us that they had sold one of these machines within an hour of the show opening.
Just about the full range of machines were on show but one model attracted much attention, the VersaStudio. Anthony explained that this was a pre-release model and further work was being done in Japan on this small 20 inch roll to roll eco-solvent printer and cutter. The printer prints CMYK and includes an option for metallic inks. A large market awaits this machine when it is finally released.
HP
HP was omnipresent at both shows with machines on several different exhibitor stands, including Celmac. Wayne Macintyre, CEO of Celmac, stated that his company alone is selling on average eight L25500 machines a month with several of the bigger models as well.
Michael Rooney, CEO of Cielab in Queensland also reported strong sales of the L25500.
Latex has certainly taken off considering it has only been available for about three years (L65500) with the L25500 only about two years.
CPI Graphics had HP’s bigger printers on their stand.
Starleaton
Whilst Starleaton were not exhibiting at the show due to a disagreement with Reed Exhibitions over limitations that were demanded from Reed Exhibitions over stand size, the company hosted an evening aboard the beautiful ship, South Steyn, that is permanently moored in Darling Harbour.
Peter Eaton, Chairman of Starleaton explained that the evening was organised to say thank to their customer base and staff for the support they have received over the company’s 30 year history. The company’s Sydney operation is about to move again due to the need to expand warehouse space.
A raffle was conducted for those present to possibly win some great prizes, including six bottles of wine, two yacht sailing opportunities in Sydney Harbour and the top prize of a 3 day cruise aboard the Rhapsody of the Seas in luxury accommodation.
