Competition and environmental concerns driving solvent market down.
According to the latest InfoTrends forecast data, the total revenue (including hardware, ink, media and service contracts) for wide format solvent inkjet systems is expected to decline from $3.1 billion in 2008 to $1.7 billion by 2013. This decline is being caused by two major factors – competition from new inkjet printing systems and environmental concerns.
“Our most current forecast highlights the acceleration of a trend that InfoTrends has been noting for several years - the decline in the high-end of the solvent inkjet market,” commented Tim Greene, Director of InfoTrends’ Wide Format Printing service. “This decline, in shipment of new units and the run rates of the installed base, impacts the overall solvent inkjet market picture quite dramatically. High-end devices are not only the highest priced units—they are also the most productive. The decline of the high-end of the solvent inkjet printer business is largely due to the focus on environmental, health, and safety requirements by end users.”
“This trend is further impacted by market leaders who are now all investing in new alternative technologies, including primarily aqueous inkjet, UV-curable inkjet, and dye-sublimation,” continued Greene. “That said, we do expect that notable suppliers to the market, and particularly the low-end of the market, will continue to nurture the development of products that offer advanced functionality to their important sign shop customers.”
