New recyclable cardboard cartridges will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 350 tons and plastic by about 95 tons per year, according to Roland DG Corporation, the global manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers for advertising and signage.

brandg corporate roland online ver1 0In a press release from its headquarters in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, Roland DG Corporation said the new recyclable ink cartridges would "transition from conventional plastic to cardboard-based materials with an 82% reduction in plastic content.


“Roland DG began taking an environmentally conscious approach by reducing plastic usage through the adoption of pouch-type ink containers in 2015. To further decrease environmental impact, Roland DG is now introducing cardboard-based ink cartridges.


"These cartridges have been specifically developed for D-EA eco-solvent ink for the ER-642 inkjet printer in the DGXPRESS limited area brand. The use of cardboard-based ink cartridges will be expanded as a replacement for existing plastic ink cartridges.

“The material change to cardboard-based ink cartridges will reduce the use of polybutylene terephthalate, which is the main material used in conventional ink cartridges, by 116.7 tons per year. The new ink cartridges will use just 36.0 tons of paper and a small amount of polypropylene (21.3 tons) per year. This will result in an annual reduction of approximately 350 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Roland DG believes that the transition to cardboard-based materials made from renewable wood is an important step towards a sustainable future.

“Roland DG will continue to pursue the reduction of environmental impact through the development of inks that minimize waste by using sustainable materials and recycling while continuing to develop technologies that offer increased value and usability.”
