Competitors came from across NSW, Victoria and South Australia for the
three-day Signcraft competition. The competition required the students
to plan and work efficiently to achieve the best possible result in the
time frame.
Blake Conyers (The Sign Centre) and Ry Marvich (Coleman Group)
representing the Sydney Region and Sydney Institute achieved excellent
results in numerous ways. Both Blake and Ry took to the competition
with determination and enthusiasm to do their best.

Getting over the first day nerves is always a task in its self, but all
the competitors were soon into their own work rhythm. It was
interesting and great viewing for the public to witness the competitors
all approaching the three jobs in a variety of ways. The three jobs
were: a digital print/vinyl lettering application onto Mini-orb, a
computer design, digital print and application and finally a
traditional job which involved the use of masks, blends and painted
panels.
Michael Doherty, John Craddock and I had the task of judging the close
competition and at times almost inseparable competitors work. Using the
Worldskills National marking scale and the set criteria for this
judging process to happen. The three practical projects all were being
assessed in the sub criteria out of twenty marks each. On top of the
sixty marks for the three jobs were the sections of: overall work
completion, OH&S, tools and equipment and work manner. This marking
system enabled the judges to assess, award and deduct marks, which in
the end gave the final rankings and scores for all competitors.
The awards night on Monday 14 July was held at the State Theatre. It
was an excellent and very well organised event, which showcased all the
competitors for what they achieved. The top three place getters in all
the 54 categories were announced and presented with their medals. The
MC for the night was Adam Spencer who did an outstanding job and made
the night a memorable one.
The final results were:
1st – Joshua Tunbridge - NSW Illawarra Institute
2nd – Blake Conyers – NSW Sydney Institute
3rd – Jamie Morrison – VIC University
