New technology plant and first of its kind innovative self-service portal opened by Minister of Economic Development and Infrastructure & Senator for Tasmania.

Tasmanian business Uniform City, in conjunction with David O’Byrne, Minister for Economic Development and Infrastructure, and Carol Brown, Senator for Tasmania, today celebrated the opening of the State’s first custom garment decoration plant in Hobart. The new equipment, supplied by GJS Machinery, will allow short print runs and custom design garment decoration work usually sent to mainland Australia or China to be produced locally, competing on costs and securing local jobs.

Charles Cook, Managing Director of Uniform City said, “This significant investment places Uniform City top of the list for clothing production, not just in Tasmania but Australia-wide.”

Uniform City’s new equipment has been acquired with the support of the Federal Government through the AusIndustry Textile, Clothing and Footwear Small Business Grant Program and direct investment from Uniform City.

Commenting at the opening ceremony today, Greg Stone, Director, GJS Machinery said, “It is great to see a local business like Uniform City capitalising on the benefits that digital printing technology can deliver, both to further its position locally, but also demonstrate that high-quality print work can be done onshore which helps to secure Australian jobs.”

In addition to the opening of the new custom garment decoration plant, Uniform City today also unveiled an innovative, and first of its kind, online self-service portal designed especially for school students to custom design clothing for graduations and events. The portal, UC Leavers, allows students to design their own custom leavers top or graduation jersey in three easy steps with the ability to share and collaborate on the design through social networking platforms.

“After 25 years of dealing with schools and students throughout Tasmania we have an excellent understanding of their needs which is why the creation of our new online self-service portal, UC Leavers, was a natural progression for our business,” said Cook. “The addition of this new printing technology to Uniform City enables us to expand our range and offerings for our Tasmanian customers and to create the foundations for interstate expansion” Cook concluded.
