I am looking for opinions on the value of social media in promoting a wide format printing company - or generic signage or printing company.
I know there are specific marketing companies that want to sell their services in this regards.
To me it looks like it will take a long time out of each day to maintain a presence in social media as it seems like it needs continuous feeding of info  rmation.
Then which one works best - Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Brian. I believe social media is very important for ANY business today. If you search any company name & put 'reviews' after the name of the company you will quickly learn which companies are good for doing business with and which aren't. People who are disgruntled will have no hesitation about making their unhappiness public on social media websites so it's important that the company (a) has a social media presence and (b) monitors comments and answers them, both good & bad.
A perfect example is I bought an item online some time ago and it got damaged in transit. The company sold me the item through eBay so there was no hiding. They replaced the broken parts very quickly and were really excellent to deal with. I gave them a rave review. About 9 months later the item broke down, mechanical failure. They asked that I return it which I did and they refunded most of the outlay for the item. The item had been very heavily used and in fact turned out to not be adequate, a more industrial grade item was recommended which the seller did not supply. I was very happy with the responsivness and the refund given that we had got almost a year of use out of the item. We upgraded to an industrial grade model and the refund paid most of the cost given it was second hand.
That company has a fantastic rating on eBay and sells many thousands of items annually. eBay is a social media sales platform but so too now is Facebook. Google reviews are prominently displayed next to search results for companies. I have just spent $900 on a set of tyres through an online seller after talking to their fitting centre. My purchase was based on website reviews of the tyres, the seller and the fitter. There's just no hiding today if you are doing business but not doing business fairly and overboard.
Yes, maintaining social media is a pain and is time consuming but it doesn't have to be your time. Any school going tech-savvy kid can do it for you and it probably won't cost you too much either.

Social media is seen as the new horizon when it comes to advertising and promotion and even sales. However I am yet to see the true value of social media as it might apply to Wide Format. The good news is that on the whole, social media can be an inexpensive area to test the water in and as long as you don't get too involved from a time (and therefore cost) perspective, it can only provide benefit. The level of what that benefit is - well that is another question.

From an online magazine or information perspective there are certainly up sides, but what about the business side of Wide Format? I am certainly interested to get participants views on how they have used social media and what benefits they have accrued to date.

I don't believe that there is a one size fits all solution and that may well be where the 'fun' is in sucking it and seeing where it goes.

Yes, it helps, but you are right, it requires constant attention and I haver to wonder if the benefits outweigh the effort that is requires, especially for a small company.
