I recently read some of the comments from your survey to the industry regarding skill shortages from November. There were a few comments about signage franchises that I wanted to address.
Firstly, at Signarama we’re extremely proud of the contribution that we’ve made to the signage industry in Australia. I don’t think I would be out of place to say that we have created a brand name in an industry where no national brand previously existed. In that sense, I think we’ve added credibility to an industry that was previously rather hidden.
It’s been 18 years since we opened our first Australian location in Preston, Victoria and today we have dozens of franchisees who purchased their Signarama business more than 10/12/15 years ago. Try telling Ross Wade in Dandenong that he’s not a true ‘signee,’ or Geoff Boyden in North Manly, or Craig Mason in Joondalup, or John Morgan in Milton. These guys – previously from outside the industry – are as much a part of the fabric of the industry as anyone. We’re proud to have them on our team.
We’ve also developed fantastic relationships with many key suppliers to the industry over that time. Major players like Spandex, Mulfords, AVS to name but a few – not to mention the hundreds of local suppliers that our 103 stores buy from on a day-to-day basis. I’d certainly profess that we’ve grown the industry in Australia since we launched here way back when.
We tell all of our franchisees when they open not to be concerned about other sign companies in their neighbourhood. Not because we feel we’re superior, but because we know that there is plenty of work out in the market place for those that want to go out and get it. We may have a different business model to many traditionalists in the industry, but we’ve proven to be able to co-exist in the industry and blossom at the same time. We look forward to many years of continued growth, along with others in the industry. We are passionate advocates for the industry and look forward to seeing the size of the whole pie grow.
