What is your greatest strength?
Always a difficult one to answer but as I look back on the last 20 years I think the consistent trend would be that I’m OK at aligning a group of people to a common goal and vision. I’m also quite good at keeping a level head in a crisis and focusing on the solution rather than the problem.
One other thing that I would add more as a core value than a strength is that I genuinely care about and want the best for the people on my team and this has mostly translated to having great people that really want to do their best for the business - which in my opinion, is the key to
any great business success. It’s never about the one leader but rather the people that make that leader look good!
What is your greatest weakness?
I’m not great at anything that requires laborious detail and I’d have to say I’m a great starter but not such a great finisher - but luckily for me - I have people on my team that are excellent finishers!
What scares you?
In a business context not really much at all - my success as a person is not defined by the success or lack thereof of the business I run - I haven’t always been able to say that but now that I can - its very releasing.
What virtue do you admire in people?
Honesty & Integrity every day of the week! I can teach most people most things but its pretty hard to change someone’s moral compass so Id rather have someone with great values and integrity that I can upskill as opposed to someone highly skilled with questionable integrity.
If you could do another job, what would it be?
Superyacht Skipper in the Mediterranean!
What's one thing about you that would surprise people?
Good question - not sure! Maybe that I am also a Director of a property development company that has created a Philanthropic Foundation to give funds to some great causes aligned with the Director’s beliefs.
Due to the success of some recent projects this is now stewarding millions of dollars.
What's your most treasured possession?
My sailing yacht.
What's your idea of absolute happiness?
A quiet remote anchorage onboard our yacht on a warm Summer’s day with my wife and three awesome kids.
If you could have dinner with two famous people, who would you choose?
I guess it depends on your definition of famous but Id love to have dinner with Brian Houston - the Senior Leader of Hillsong Church - regardless of what you believe - the guy is an incredible leader.
Second on the list would be a bit tricky to organise as he is no longer with us but I really admire Bob Oatley of Oatley Wine and Hamilton Island fame. From the outside looking in he seems to have done an incredible job of creating a brand that values excellence while upholding strong family values.
If you could turn back time, what would you change in your life?
No real regrets - I don’t think Id change anything because all of the events in my life both positive and negative have helped me to grow into who I am today - not that I’ve “arrived” - Ive still got plenty more to learn and usually the hard stuff is my best teacher!
What is your greatest achievement?
I’m incredibly proud of the 3 kids my wife, Liane & I have raised. Parenting is a tough gig these days - so many competing distractions and so when I observe my now 18,13 & 11 year old making great life choices and going about life in a way that makes me proud then Id have to say thats my greatest achievement....although it was mostly Liane’s work not mine!
What's the most Australian thing about you?
My Passport?! What does “most Australian” even mean these days? I love a good pavlova? - although I hear the Kiwis are claiming this is there invention now. I’d say the most Australian thing about me is my love for Australia. I’m lucky enough to get to fly around the world a fair bit and thats always a great reminder of how incredible a country Australia actually is.
Where would we find you at a party?
Trying to find out where they keep their stash of good wines.
lf you were down to your last $20, what would you spend it on?
Two bulk 24 packs of bottled water - Id then go sell them on the beach for $2 each and turn my $20 into $96!
How would you like to be remembered?
I’d like to think that people would remember me as someone who valued people and their ability to achieve great things together in business while still having a bit of fun along the way.
